How would you describe a hero? Is it about scoring a winning goal, saving a life, or serving your country?  There is a well-known saying “ not all hero’s wear capes” in fact most do not,  especially our community heroes. They go under the radar, contributing to local causes, always volunteering to give a helping hand, making sure things run smoothly without accolades or plaudits.

Jimmy Houlihan is one of them, known around Chilton for his straight talking and dry sense of humour, he probably won’t thank us for this article, but without his help there would not be as many prizes for children at the Chilton Show, or hotdogs at the Family Rave. Many events for those who need it most are supported by Jimmy and his fellow “Coffin Dodgers” (the group of local Benefactors who meet in the Wheatsheaf Pub and were voted last year’s Community Champions. He also spends time ensuring our Miners’ Welfare Recreation Grounds are secure, so when the key to the Bowling Pavilion recently went missing, Jimmy checked the building every hour during the night to make sure our local heritage assets was safe.

The council recognised Jimmy’s extensive contribution this year by making him Mayor’s consort  and he proudly wears the chain for Chilton.

Who is your “Community Champion” tell us their story so we can thank them on behalf of the Chilton Community.
